symptoms of thalassemia

What is thalassemia? It is a rare form of blood disease where you find that the levels of haemoglobin are less with the red blood cells fewer in terms of count in your body. Haemoglobin is the epicentre of the red blood cells which allows you to carry oxygen to the various parts of the body. If the levels of haemoglobin are less and if the count of red blood cells does occur on the lesser side, you will suffer from anaemia. If you are suffering from the mild version of it then treatment may not be needed. But if it does occur at a serious level, then you would need to be part of blood transfusions. In fact steps can be taken at your own end to cope up with the fatigue. Proper exercise with a healthy diet would go a long way in achieving the desired outcome.

If you carefully explore the symptoms it seems to be abdominal swelling, urine does become dark along with weakness and fatigue. There are several versions of thalassemia and the symptoms would depend on the type and the condition you are prone to. In case of some babies the symptoms may be visible at the time of birth. Whereas  in case of some others it could be a couple of years after birth. If you are suffering from affected haemoglobin there would be no symptoms at all.

Risk factors

There are factors which increase the chances of you suffering from thalassemia

  • Genetic issues- it could be passed on to the kids from the parents. This is done via the mutated genes of haemoglobin. In case if you are suffering from a family history then the chances of you suffering from the same are on the higher side.

Complications

Some of the possible complications of thalassemia include

  • Overload of iron- if you are suffering from this disorder there is a strong chance that too much iron would be there in your bodies. This could in fact arise from the disorder or from frequent transfusions of blood as well. In the system there are a host of hormone production glands which goes on to combat the process in the body.
  • Infection- If you are suffering from thalassemia there is an increased chance of infection.
  • Bone deformities- with this disorder your bones are prone to expansion. This would cause them to widen in a big way. it could lead to an abnormal structure of the bone particularly in the skull and the face. It does make the bone brittle and the chances of bones breaking are all the more.
  • Growth rates at a slower rate- with thalassemia a lot of problems in puberty could be experienced.
